Things I’ve Been Up To
April 10th, 2012
In case you were wondering what I’ve been doing with myself instead of writing endless blog posts, I’ve compiled a selection of my recent activities.
Bathroom curtains from reclaimed sheets.
- Moving In
This one goes without saying perhaps, but it’s taken up such a large chunk of my time for the past month that I had to mention it. From refinishing 90-year-old floors to installing new laminate flooring (you should see all the power tools I’ve learned to use); from making curtains out of old sheets to hanging towel bars; etc. And then there are the seemingly endless boxes. Every other one of which contains either books or fabric. Oops. You can see more pictures of our homemaking progress at Bungalowing. - Volunteering at the local Historical Society
You can bet I made a beeline for the history museum in a nearby town. I’ve been volunteering there since February, helping with their surprisingly (for a relatively small area) complete and truly fantastic costume collection. There are dresses from 1860 to 1980, uniforms from every 20th-century war, undergarments, coats, hats, gloves, and much more. They even let me pick out four dresses to put on display later this month for their seasonal fashion exhibit. - Learning to Play Bridge
It turns out there are even fewer whist players in California than New York. So I begged the local bridge doyens to teach me. Along with our expert teacher, there are two other lovely ladies who are also studying the game. We play every Saturday afternoon. - Tickling the Ivories
Our new house came complete with a baby grand piano. It’s the first time in more than 10 years that I’ve had constant access to a keyboard instrument and I had no idea how much I missed playing. My mother made me a present of the music books I used during my decade of piano lessons (they’d been hers when she studied music). I also inherited batches of sheet music from my grandmother and from a dear friend and musician who once lived in our new house — it was her piano as well. Then there’s my collection of early 20th-century hymnals… - Producing a Radio Show
Life has a funny way of making you do things you never imagined you’d do. I suddenly find myself the producer/engineer of a syndicated radio program.
Alas, my sewing has been limited to simple curtains and other little household odds and ends lately. With time of the essence and most of my supplies still in boxes, I haven’t even tried to find an historic angle to these projects. But life is gradually settling into a semblance of routine. Which means it won’t be long before I’m up to my old tricks again…
New Horizons
April 8th, 2012
I’m back.
We’ve been in our cottage, pictured below, for a little more than a month now. And though we’re far from settled (the floor is still being laid in the bedroom and I haven’t found the can opener yet), I feel it is time to take up the threads of my life again.
If this is not your first time here, you’ve probably noticed that the site has a new “theme,” as it were. I admit to borrowing shamelessly from Mucha and Beardsley, but you know they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Why go nouveau? It’s always been an appealing aesthetic, and now that I find myself living in an early 20th century bungalow it’s also rather appropriate. And I can’t think of a better way to express my expanding eras. Besides, who doesn’t love peacocks?
Those horizons I mentioned in the post title are broad indeed. Physically, on the California coastline, and metaphorically, as I ponder what I should do with the rest of my life.
More soon.
An Update of Sorts
March 18th, 2012
I’m alive! Very much so in fact. But also very busy, finally moving into our new home. If you’re curious, visit Bungalowing on Tumblr for daily pictures of our progress.
Yes, I have been hammering in a ballgown. Why not?
Among other changes in my life, I am also broadening my horizons beyond the 1850s. Those of you who pay attention to your address bar may have noticed that this blog is now located at evaulz.com/circa. The “theme” of the site will very soon be updated to match my burgeoning aesthetic as well.
More soon!
Found in the Closet
November 23rd, 2011
While cleaning out my bedroom closet, I came across a bag I’d forgotten to sort. My mother delivered it last year, I think from my Auntie Mary but maybe from my Gram. It contained a fascinating assortment of mid-20th century treasures.
Three sets of plastic sock needles.
Garish plastic buttons.
A fat quarter of palm-tree printed fabric.
“Zip Her” — a gadget for closing your own dress from behind.
Printed hankies.
Black gloves with buttons, alas way too small to fit my unnaturally long fingers.
Wooden things, including two (on the right) that seem to be for darning, and (on the left) a barbell.
There were two other things in the bag, but they are so monumentally “cool” that I am saving them for individual posts.
I Am Alive
November 10th, 2011
Writing this on the run — no time to deliver my very good excuses for being silent over the past week. But soon, soon.
Until then, let the chaos continue.
More anon.
